Arup carried out the sustainability consulting for Forum Sintra and achieved the BREEAM certification in the category "Good".
Forum Sintra completed the BREEAM assessment and it became the first retail development in Portugal to be registered and assessed by these standards.
This 150.000m2 shopping centre, recently featured in the city of Sintra, is considered a pilot study for a new generation of future commercial developments. The design concept was developed by Chapman Tayor España together with the local architects ARX Portugal with the desire to break away from the conventional ideas that most shopping malls are built around.
BREEAM® is the international certification methodology for building sustainability with the longest history and experience. It evaluates buildings for their contribution to the welfare and protection of the environment by a credit system grouped into five categories of certification: pass, good, very good, excellent and outstanding. This system also takes into account items such as management, materials, energy, waste, transport, land use and ecology of the site, water, pollution and health & wellness.
Arup carried out the BREEAM sustainability consultancy and certification for the retail obtaining the BREEAM Good certification according to BREEAM Europe Commercial 2009.
The sustainability consultancy has taken into account the environmental impact of the construction, the reclamation of previously developed land, energy efficiency in elevators and escalators, daylight provision, comfort of the retail users and water consumption among others.
This centre is considered a pilot study for a new generation of future commercial developments that seeks to prioritize the sustainability and energy efficiency.
