UP, and away!

  • Lighting installation by a Singapore-based team of Arup lighting designers, architects and engineers
  • Featured at key international lighting events like Vivid Sydney, Luminance! and Burning Man in 2012

Consisting of five sets of psychedelic wings on recycled bicycles, the installation is inspired by a familiar childhood fantasy that many of us may identify with – one of flying free! The wings are designed to light up according to the speed of the rider. The faster one pedals the brighter the wings become. This is made possible through an intelligent circuit board that takes input from a device on the wheel and correspondingly controls the brightness of the LED lights.

UP, and away! is one of 27 pieces of artwork displayed at Luminance!, themed ‘dreams and aspirations’. As a festival partner, Arup also lent its experience and technical expertise at several master class workshops, where participating young artists took the opportunity to fine tune and improve on their artwork.

"Arup has been recognised for its work on many iconic and award-winning structures around the world. Their participation exemplifies the importance of collaborating and innovating, both locally and globally."

— Allan Lim, festival co-director of Luminance!

The festival was held between 23 June and 1 July 2012 at *SCAPE, an integrated talent and resource hub for the youths of Singapore, located in the heart of Orchard Road.

Burning Man in Nevada, USA, is also hosting UP, and away! in August 2012.

“Key calendar events like these have presented to Arup unconventional yet meaningful opportunities to showcase our multidisciplinary design expertise, and most of all, to connect with a myriad audience.”

— Key Anderson, Arup’s lighting leader in Singapore.

The international UP, and away! design team consists of Key Anderson, Vellachi Ganesan, Alma Banuelos, Gautam Bhasin, Mauro Pellegrini, and many more from Singapore, Tim Carr and Tim Hunt from Sydney, and Francesco Anselmo from London.
