Arup appointed to pedestrian safety pilot scheme in Tooting town centre

UK Press Team
28 September 2015

Arup will support Transport for London (TfL) and Wandsworth Borough Council (WBC) to deliver a transport strategy and action plan to address pedestrian safety and to increase the level of walking in the area.

Funding of up to £5million is set to be invested in the Tooting pilot scheme to implement solutions for improving safety and enjoyment for all users with a particular focus on pedestrians. Arup will provide multi-disciplinary services, working together to generate holistic and innovative ideas and solutions for Tooting.

We are delighted to be working with Transport for London and Wandsworth Borough Council to shape a safer Tooting for pedestrians and make the town centre a better place to walk. More walking in Tooting will bring economic benefits for retailers and employers, as well as a host of physical health and mental health benefits. Walking is the least polluting, cheapest and most reliable form of transport. ” Susan Claris Susan Claris Transport Planner

Arup will work with TfL, WBC and stakeholders (including residents and businesses, local transport operators, the Metropolitan police and other groups) to ensure that the solutions improve the quality of the town centre for the community.

This project is fantastic news for Tooting and will be warmly welcomed by local people. The town centre is a fantastic, vibrant place but there is plenty of room for improvement at this very busy junction. ” Cllr Jonathan Cook Wandsworth Council’s transport spokesman

Enhancements to the town centre may include road junctions and crossing points as well as improvements in awareness of pedestrian safety.

Please find more about the project on the Wandsworth and TfL websites.
