Arup Young Professionals Recognised by the Australian Water Association

Stacey Ryan
21 December 2015

In 2013, Gabrielle McGill spent a year-long deployment for Engineers Without Borders (EWB) in Cambodia, where she worked on developing and delivering sanitation for communities living on and around Tonle Sap Lake.

In 2015 she was recognised as the Australian Young Water Professional of the year by the AWA. Recognised as a leader and educator amongst her colleagues, peers and the broader community.

Industry recognition of that (EWB work) is perhaps a sign that there's a shift towards valuing the end users of what engineering does, that really made me quite excited that perhaps the industry is thinking a bit more about what they're doing and how that effects people.

- Gabrielle McGill, Arup

The Arup process engineer will be a keynote speaker and the 2016 International Water Association Young Water Professional’s Conference. McGill will be talking about her experiences in Cambodia and some of the similarities between our wastewater solutions.

This week Walter Reinhardt was awarded 2016 ACT Young Water Professional of the year and is now in the pool of talented and committed water professionals to be considered for the Australian 2016 Young Professional of the year.

Walter Reinhardt, a PhD in water policy and economics based in the Arup Canberra office was integral to the publication of the recent Australian Consumer Water Report, a collaboration with Arup and the AWA. Working together to understand community water attitudes across Australia. Walter led the survey instrument development, technical management and results analysis. The results of the Australian Water Consumer Outlook were presented that the National Water Policy Summit, and are available online here.

Being recognised for the multi-disciplinary work we did on the report is a great honour. Research which helps us develop a better understanding of the social side of water usage, and the community needs and attitudes, is a great outcome for water professionals and the wider community.

- Walter Reinhardt, Arup

Young Water Professionals are chosen for displaying exemplary personal and professional contribution to the water industry and recognised for raising the profile of careers in the water industry as well as for raising water awareness in the community.

I am really pleased that Gabrielle and Walter have been publically recognised for both their professional qualities and for the great work they are doing in the community. I look forward to many years to come of working with such inspirational young people.
