Arup helped bring the flower-like design of the Museu do Amanhã to life.

On 19 December, the Museu do Amanhã — or the Museum of Tomorrow — opened to the public. Arup, in collaboration with Casagrande Engineering, provided project review services for structural engineering, air conditioning systems, façades, and facilities.

We have worked effectively, bringing the benefits of Arup’s global expertise in solutions for complex and challenging buildings like this, resulting in a benefit to the project and to all parties involved.

Ricardo Pittella, Arup Principal

Designed by the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, the Museu do Amanhã had its form inspired by the bromeliads of the botanical garden. Surrounded by reflecting pools, gardens, bike paths, and recreational areas, it uses technology as a support for art and science.

The construction of the Museu do Amanhã is part of the Porto Maravilha urban project, which aims to revitalise Rio’s downtown. Following a model similar to the Portuguese Language Museum and the Soccer Museum in São Paulo, the audience will experience content in a sensory, interactive way.
