Kaohsiung port terminal and cruise service centre, Kaohsiung

Incorporating a wide range sustainable design solutions

The port terminal and cruise service center is a spectacular addition to Kaohsing's urban landscape, and part of the city's strategic infrastructure to drive economic development. The creative design was selected from nearly 100 entries for an international design competition.

Arup supported the winning design team, Reiser+Umemoto RUR Architecture PC and Fei & Cheng Associates, with multi-disciplinary services including traffic, fire, mechanicalelectric and public health engineering, logistics and operations.

Strategic infrastructure

The development is part of the plan formulated by the Kaohsiung Harbour Bureau and the Ministry of Transportation and Communications of Taiwan to create a quality environment to serve passengers, visitors and the community.

Under this plan, cruise and passenger ferry service facilities and the surrounding environment will be improved; visitors will be provided with more convenient and comfortable facilities; and the offices of various port administrative agencies will be integrated into one area to enhance service quality. The plan will also help promote international exchange and boost both international and domestic tourism.

Project Summary

37,000  GFA

2,000 peak passenger flow per hour

A dynamic icon

The centre's design disregards the conventional linear form of ports, and aims to create a dynamic icon for Kaohsiung. The development not only provides first class cruise terminal services to passengers, but also comprises offices, conference venues, restaurants, exhibition halls, retail areas and open space for leisure.

The design was selected by a panel of six international jurists for its well designed open and secured spaces, good circulation strategy, impressive visual appearance from the ocean and sophisticated interaction between the local culture and site characteristics.

A sustainable model

Following the modern day expectations of sustainable design and responsible transport, Arup and the design team developed a set of sustainable design solutions integral with the centre's design.

The proposals include passive energy saving technology including a façade that reduces solar heat gain and is streamlined to encourage natural ventilation with BMS control openings.

Active energy saving technology includes a seawater cooling system that takes advantage of the waterfront location; ice-storage system, photovoltaic systems to generate lighting and small power. When completed in late 2019, the Port Terminal and Cruise Service Center will become a visually striking landmark for the city of Kaohsing and act as a catalyst for sustainable development in the region.
