The Indonesian Conference Exhibition (ICE) is Indonesia’s largest convention and exhibition facility at over 10 football fields in length. This stunning achievement will enhance the development of BSD City, Bumi Serpong Damai, a planned community in the Tangerang District of the greater Jakarta region.
Launched with bang, with a grand opening over an impressive one month of special events throughout August, ICE is set to attract millions of visitors each year and bring significant economic benefits to the economy and local communities.
As a key consultant, Arup provided structural engineering, lighting design, acoustics and audio visual design of this one kilometre long facility.
Containing more than 120,000m2 of international exhibition, pre-function and convention spaces, including 16 exhibition halls and two multi-level convention facilities, this multi-purpose venue will host international conventions and exhibitions, concerts, sport, banquets, weddings and other events, including potentially the Asian Games in Jakarta in 2018.
With Arup’s international expertise, we brought experience not previously available in the local Indonesian market, delivering high quality international design services for this highly complex project. Working with Cox Architects our combined experience and skills added immediate value to the Client, setting the platform for the streamlined integration and delivery by the Client and local Contractor in Indonesia.
ICE is a fantastic example of Arup, in collaboration with our long-term partner Cox Architects, bringing our wealth of experience and expertise in Exhibition and Convention Centre projects to a new Client and in a market where this level of service was not available locally. The scale up of project and timeframe of delivery for a new building typology in Indonesia were extremely challenging for our Client, however their decision to retain the Arup team to undertake not just the scheme design for the entire project from foundation to roof, but the detailed design of all floor and roof steelwork – in their words – “was a perfect result”. Early, clear, and consolidated advice from structure through to venue planning, AV, acoustics, and lighting provided clarity of direction from commencement of design.
