Established in 1985 as Arup’s first office in the Americas, the San Francisco office is one of the largest in the region, with over 300 staff members. Our office offers a full suite of multidisciplinary services, contributing to projects across their entire lifecycle, from strategy and vision to operations and maintenance. We bring a combination of local perspective and deep global expertise to provide quality work for each of our diverse clients.

With a strong portfolio of projects across a wide range of industries, Arup’s work contributes to the continued growth of the Bay Area. We are highly versed in campus design projects that span several key markets, from Science, Industry, and Technology to Education and Healthcare. Other Healthcare work also includes the new Child, Adolescent and Adult Behavioral Health Services Center at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center and the new hospital at UCSF Helen Diller Medical Center at Parnassus Heights. Additionally, our team is influencing California’s future of mobility. In Northern California, we are revitalizing the gateway to San Francisco with Presidio Parkway as well as linking and integrating Northern California’s passenger rail network through BART Link21 and VTA’s BART Silicon Valley Phase II Project. We are also creating better connectivity and driving economic development in the Central Valley by designing the first four stations to be constructed on the California High-Speed Rail system — which will set the standard for station design systemwide.

Sustainability and resilience are at the heart of our work, exemplified by the LEED Platinum California Academy of Sciences and 181 Fremont, the most seismically resilient tall building on the West Coast. We are helping achieve better passenger experience, more efficient operations, and more sustainable outcomes for San Francisco International Airport, with the delivery of a campus-wide zero net energy plan and multidiscipline design and sustainability consulting for Harvey Milk Terminal 1 Boarding Area B. Our team is influencing the expansion of clean energy in California by leveraging SolarResilient, an Arup-developed digital toolset for achieving community resilience hubs at scale. We also have contributed to the 3.3mi Silicon Valley Clean Water Gravity Pipeline tunnel, which brings resilient water infrastructure to the region for the next 100 years.

Members of the office are always looking for opportunities to explore new ideas, innovations, and technologies. Our San Francisco office features a SoundLab, our innovative collaboration environment for clients and project constituents to hear, listen, experience, and shape the acoustics and sound of a project.  It is used across a range of our projects including arts, culture, entertainment, healthcare, transport, education, and commercial. We often host local community and business development events to share our space and get connected with clients and collaborators working in the Bay Area.

The team in our San Francisco office works closely with our Seattle, Oakland, and Los Angeles offices to deliver landmark projects across the western United States. We also have a handful of staff members based in touchdown spaces in Sacramento and San Jose, furthering Arup’s reach across the West.
