Artificial Intelligence (AI) Policy
At Arup we see AI, as defined by the OECD, as a pivotal technology that will augment, not replace, our collective and creative intelligence, judgement, and expertise. We aim to design and use AI to drive quality and growth for our clients and our projects in a way that enhances our delivery of total design and supports our pursuit of excellence. The AI systems we ‘take, shape, or make’ will accelerate our mission to shape a better world, guided by six key principles aligned with our strategy and values.
Aims
-
Compliance: AI systems comply with relevant regulations and laws
-
Safety: AI systems operate as we intend them to, with sufficient reliability, robustness and security
-
Transparency: transparent AI systems foster our clients’ trust and our members’ confidence in using AI
-
Accountability: humans have responsibility for AI systems and outputs
-
Fairness: AI systems and outputs do not discriminate unfairly against members, clients, or the public
-
Sustainability: environmental and social impacts are carefully assessed in our use and design of AI
We will
-
Use approved AI systems in a way that is consistent with our aims, other Arup policies and additional client requirements
-
Provide our members with the guidance and training they need to understand AI and action this policy
-
Conduct AI risk assessments and implement assurance mechanisms
-
Encourage a culture of curiosity and critical thinking for considered use of AI
-
Manage our AI systems over time to ensure they remain fit for purpose
-
Bring a diversity of thought and expertise to designing AI systems
- Handle data for AI systems ethically and securely in line with our data handling protocols
-
Invest in ongoing regulatory foresight, research, learning and partnerships to maintain best-practice
