Director
Mitsuhiro Kanada is a distinguished structural engineer and Arup Fellow.
His research spans timber-CFRP hybrid structures, 1,300-year-old FRU, and timber-steel hybrid bridges. He is the recipient of awards including the Gengo Matsui Award and IStructE Award. His innovative work has garnered international attention, including features on the Discovery Channel for eminent projects like Maison Hermes and the Taichung Metropolitan Opera House. Notably, Mitsuhiro designed the Japan Pavilion for Expo Milan 2015, creating an innovative design proposal which made it possible to construct the beautiful timber structure. He was also instrumental in the design of the Minna no Mori Gifu Media Cosmo, a timber design that reduced energy consumption by 50% compared to typical libraries in Japan, as well as a sustainable pavilion for Gwangju Biennale Folly in 2024. Mitsuhiro has lectured on the Gifu Media Cosmos at the 27th International Wood Construction Conference in 2023, speaking on circularity in building design. Mitsuhiro recognises the importance of providing opportunities for Arup’s junior members to gain recognition and leads a variety of initiatives to develop their skills and external networks.
