As the UK strives to achieve clean power by 2030 and a green industrial revolution to reach its 2050 net zero target, new low carbon energy and industrial schemes are underway at scale and at pace across the UK’s six industrial clusters.

The availability of good quality and high volumes of water is critical for the construction and operation of these schemes, especially hydrogen production.

Prepared by Arup on behalf of the Humber Industrial Cluster, the largest cluster targeted to produce up to 30% of the UK’s hydrogen, this report outlines the Humber’s water scarcity challenge. It also identifies seven, practical and achievable opportunities at national, regional and local level to help the Humber, and potentially other industrial clusters, secure the water required while also ensuring water availability for the wider community, businesses and environment.
