Arup and the MTR Corporation have jointly received two awards at the IFMA Asia Pacific Awards of Excellence 2024, including an Excellence Award in the ESG achievement category, and an Excellence Award in the Innovation and technology application in facility management category.

MTR Carbon Digital Platform
Excellence Award in ESG achievement category

As a low-carbon public transport provider, MTR is committed to achieving its 2030 science-based carbon reduction targets. To support MTR’s decarbonisation efforts, Arup worked closely with MTR to develop an advanced Carbon Digital Platform, customised to gather and consolidate carbon data from MTR’s extensive portfolio of railway and investment property assets, covering 99 MTR stations, 271km of track, 13 depots, 16 shopping malls and four office buildings.

The platform has provided MTR with an efficient, systematic and user-friendly means to collect diverse carbon data from various business units and functions. Through its interactive data visualisation capabilities, the platform provides insights into the carbon footprint, aiding in informed decision-making. The system includes a robust data review mechanism with multi-level data checks to ensure data quality and reliability. This platform enables MTR to effectively monitor the carbon reduction progress towards achieving its 2030 science-based carbon reduction targets.

Energy enhancement for ELEMENTS
Excellence Award in Innovation and technology application in facility management category

Owned and managed by MTR, ELEMENTS is a prominent shopping mall located atop Kowloon Station, serving as a hub for tourists and residents since its establishment in 2007 and covering more than one million square feet.

As the technical and sustainability consultant, Arup assisted to lead the energy management assessment, identifying operational improvement opportunities and refining logic based on operation data and on-going commissioning efforts. Working with Neuron as the technology advisor, Arup has assisted MTR in evaluating the existing physical and digital infrastructure, developing AI and machine learning (ML) workflows and methodologies, and incorporating existing systems into Neuron. Through continuous discussions, on-site trials, and performance reviews, the technical expertise and these models were implemented and translated into an intuitive, all-encompassing platform for daily management and operations, facilitating the enhancement of energy performance and customer experience.

Organised by the International Facility Management Association (IFMA), the award recognises outstanding achievements in facility management across the Asia-Pacific region and celebrates excellence in various categories, highlighting innovative practices, sustainability, and effective facility management.
