Dublin area mobility is set to be transformed through the new BusConnects Core Bus Corridors Infrastructure Works programme, which will develop 12 new core bus corridors across the Greater Dublin Area.

The ten-year initiative will also enhance cycling and pedestrian facilities, playing a pivotal role in decarbonising the transport sector and aligning with the Government’s policies to improve public transport and address climate change.

Arup, in collaboration with Jacobs, SYSTRA and Chandler KBS, will oversee the technical design, contract administration and site supervision of approximately 230km of continuous bus priority corridors and 200km of cycle paths and pedestrian facilities.

Aidan Gallagher, NTA Head of BusConnects Dublin Infrastructure, said: “The NTA is excited to have reached this critical step for BusConnects Dublin, and now the really hard work begins on delivering this mega project with our Client Partner, Arup. BusConnects will deliver a better-connected Dublin with improved public transport, cycling and pedestrian infrastructure. This will lead to greater reliability and improved journey times with better access to housing, employment and essential services such as healthcare and education.”

This landmark project will significantly improve the reliability, efficiency and convenience of public transport and active travel, facilitating more people to move through the city and suburbs by sustainable modes.

The BusConnects Core Bus Corridors Infrastructure Works Programme builds on Arup’s previous involvement in the scheme design of three of the twelve BusConnects Dublin corridors. Additionally, Arup teamed with Jacobs to deliver the planning and environmental assessments for all twelve routes.

Arup’s multidisciplinary team, including civil engineers, landscape architects, environmental consultants, contract administration specialists, health and safety advisors and project managers, will be co-located with other members of the Client Partner delivery team at the NTA’s Smithfield office in Dublin city centre.

In addition to the Dublin scheme, Arup has been involved in the design stages of BusConnects Cork and the BusConnects Galway Cross-City Link project. BusConnects is a national programme developed and managed by the NTA and funded by Project Ireland 2040.
