Global engineering and sustainable development consultancy Arup has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with multiple industry leaders to join a pioneering project aimed at driving nature inclusivity in offshore wind farm design.

Led by Wood Thilsted, this collaborative effort seeks to redefine the approach to offshore wind farms, ensuring they positively impact natural ecosystems throughout their lifecycle.

The initiative brings together a diverse group of experts from across the offshore wind sector. By combining engineering and environmental expertise, the project seeks to support the development of wind farms that not only generate renewable energy but also support healthy marine and coastal ecosystems.

Arup's involvement in this project underscores its commitment to sustainable development in the built environment alongside the transition to net zero.

Graeme McCann, Renewable Energy Leader for the UKIMEA region, commented: "We are excited to collaborate with leading industry partners to advance nature-inclusive design of offshore wind farms. This initiative aligns with Arup’s vision of creating sustainable and resilient infrastructure that benefits both people and the planet."

The Joint Industry Project (JIP) will explore innovative design and operational practices that enhance the natural environment. This includes measures to protect marine life and promote biodiversity, ensuring that wind farms are not just neutral but beneficial to their surroundings.

As part of this initiative, Arup will leverage its extensive experience in sustainable development to help set new standards for environmental responsibility in the renewable energy sector. The collaboration with industry leaders and research institutes underscores a shared vision of creating a more sustainable future.
