As a trusted partner in climate and sustainable consultancy, Arup has successfully supported Nan Fung Group in achieving critical milestones in its decarbonisation journey, making it one of the few real estate companies in Hong Kong to secure Science Based Target initiative (SBTi) validation and approval for near-term, long-term and net-zero targets across its Hong Kong property portfolio.
Nan Fung Group, a prominent real estate developer with a diverse portfolio in and beyond Hong Kong, has committed to ambitious climate goals. In partnership with Arup, Nan Fung developed a comprehensive corporate decarbonisation roadmap and implemented retro-commissioning across local assets.
During the process, Arup guided Nan Fung in setting science-based decarbonisation targets, including assessing organisational boundaries, conducting a thorough carbon inventory, and developing tailored roadmaps for each operational unit. We worked closely with Nan Fung to ensure the targets were ambitious but also achievable, focusing on actual decarbonisation instead of relying on offsetting strategies.
We also supported Nan Fung in developing asset-level decarbonisation strategies in Hong Kong, Shanghai and London, addressing technical considerations such as optimising operational data and available space for retrofits. In collaboration with its local offices, we arranged site visits and worked closely with operators to gather essential energy data. Through in-depth analysis of asset performance, we identified potential energy-saving opportunities. Based on the results, we prioritised and assisted in implementing these measures.
Our efforts have helped Nan Fung formulate its SBTi-approved targets in their Hong Kong property portfolio, including a near-term target aligned with the 1.5°C pathway and a net-zero target of 99.6% emission reduction. We also facilitated significant improvements in operational efficiency and energy saving across its assets. A prime example is TKO Plaza, which achieved a reduction of over 25% in energy use following retro-commissioning processes in 2018 and 2022.
This achievement has showcased our expertise in holistic decarbonisation strategies, from setting corporate roadmaps to accelerating existing asset decarbonisation. We will continue to work with Nan Fung on decarbonising other assets and to leverage our experience to help the industry in the sustainable transformation of the built environment.
