Arup’s landscape architecture team, in collaboration with landscape architects in Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) and Cathal O’Meara Landscape Architects, developed a suite of documents for TII that redefine the role of green spaces within the country’s urban transport infrastructure.

The project, which won the Landscape Theory, Policy and Management category, was celebrated at the ILI Design Awards held on 28 November at the Chartered Accountants Building in Dublin. Established in 1992 by the ILI, the biennial awards recognise excellence in landscape planning, design and management.

The award-winning documents offer innovative solutions to combat climate change and biodiversity loss through the use of soft landscape elements like trees, hedgerows, perennials, grass and other living horticultural elements. The work is based on a thorough review of legislation and policy, analysis of landscape typologies within transport corridors, case studies and research on the benefits of soft landscape treatments.

The work sets a benchmark for how soft landscape treatments can transform linear transport urban spaces into functional, equitable and climate-positive places. Published in May 2024, the soft landscaping guidelines for urban transport provide guidance for the design, delivery and implementation of soft landscape treatments in transport environments, supplementing existing TII publications. Arup is building an extensive portfolio of nature related services for transport infrastructure, with the recent development of a biodiversity assessment framework for TII.

Working together with landscape architecture from Arup and Cathal O’Meara Landscape Architects, TII has taken a significant step in integrating green infrastructure into urban transport systems across Ireland. Fostering biodiversity and creating sustainable landscapes that enhance the environmental and social value of surrounding communities.
