Dr Vincent Cheng, Arup Fellow and Director of Climate and Sustainability in East Asia, has won the Climate Governance Award at the Hong Kong Institute of Directors (HKIoD) Award Series for Director Excellence 2024.
With over 30 years of experience in sustainability engineering, Vincent has dedicated himself to transforming the built environment and professional practice. Known in the industry as an expert in sustainable design for urban planning, infrastructure and buildings, Vincent has led numerous award-winning low-carbon and climate-positive projects in the region. In particular, his work on District Cooling System (DCS) at Kai Tak and other new development areas has been pivotal in responding to the government’s climate action plan. He has served as a director at Arup since 2010 and joined the East Asia Board in 2020.
Arup has committed to achieving net zero emissions across its entire operations by 2030, reducing its scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions by 30% within the next five years. As the East Asia Sustainable Development Leader, Vincent has played a key role in shaping our policy and commitments. Since 2022, we have also withdrawn from new energy commissions involving hydrocarbon-based fuels.
Empowered by the East Asia Board, Vincent has been driving the development of climate governance competence. He led the creation of the East Asia Region Sustainable Development Roadmap, aligning the region’s long-term business goals with our global net zero commitment. Tailored KPIs were established to evaluate our regional performance, while enhancing project delivery, clients and business services, and research initiatives.
Organised by the HKIoD, the Climate Governance Awards recognise and inspire exemplary achievements in climate governance and advocate for climate action by directors.
