HKeToll wins prestigious APICTA Awards 2024
HKeToll has won the Winner Award in the Public Sector and Government ‒ Citizen Services category at the Asia Pacific Information and Communications Technology Alliance (APICTA) Awards 2024.

As Hong Kong’s first free-flow tolling system, HKeToll is a key smart mobility initiative promulgated in the Hong Kong Smart City Blueprint, aimed at utilising technologies to enhance the overall efficiency of the city’s transport system.
Arup, in collaboration with Transport Department of the HKSAR Government and Autotoll Limited, brought together experts from several of its offices around the globe to deliver this innovative project. We were involved in the design of HKeToll’s system architecture and workflow, through to the functional and performance specifications for its implementation.
It’s a tremendous honour to receive this award. HKeToll is a testament to our dedication to innovation and the use of digital technology to enhance public services. This project not only provides citizens of Hong Kong with a more efficient and convenient tolling system but also represents a significant advancement in intelligent mobility, contributing to the development of a smarter, more sustainable city.
HKeToll eliminates the need for physical toll booths, reducing traffic congestion and improving travel times for the general public. Utilising Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology, combined with Automatic Number Plate Recognition and LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging), the system reads the unpowered toll tags affixed to vehicles’ windscreens, and tolls are automatically collected from the pre-set payment accounts. Motorists can manage their accounts and settle tolls conveniently through HKeToll website or mobile app, using various electronic payment methods.
HKeToll has been implemented smoothly at all government tolled tunnels and the Tsing Sha Control Area, becoming the primary toll collection system for all vehicles passing through tunnels. It also facilitated the implementation of Time Varying Toll to rationalise the traffic flows at the three road harbour crossings since December 2023, achieving an apparent reduction of peak hour traffic queues.
The project was also awarded the Silver Award in Smart Transport category at the HKICT Award 2024 – Smart Mobility Award.
Regarded as the OSCAR of ICT Awards, APICTA is an international awards programme designed to stimulate ICT innovation and creativity, promote economic and trade relations, facilitate technology transfer, and offer business matching opportunities via exposure to venture capitalists and investors.
