This 2.2km strategic line links Macau’s light rail network to the Guangzhou-Zhuhai Intercity Railway via the Hengqin Checkpoint, providing a smooth and efficient travel experience for commuters and tourists.
Appointed by the Transportation Infrastructure Office of the Macau SAR Government, Arup led the scheme and preliminary design of this transformative project. Our scope included the elevated Lotus Station and the underground Hengqin Station, interconnected by viaducts and tunnels. As the sub-consultant to the lead designer, China Rail Fourth Design Institute Group, during the detailed design stage, we provided multidisciplinary design services, including civil, structural, and MEP engineering, architecture, geotechnics, transport, and environmental consulting.
The Hengqin Line is designed for seamless travel. Lotus Station serves as an integrated transfer hub between LRT Phase 1 and Hengqin Line. Hengqin Station integrates with the Hengqin Border Checkpoint Building, transforming it into a major transport hub with connections to other public transport and the intercity railway extension.
Both stations are crafted to meet functional needs and site constraints within budget. Lotus Station features a vibrant red, symbolising the first LRT connection between two cities, while Hengqin Station uses a calming blue to suit the limited underground space.
Both designs prioritise a natural aesthetic and incorporate passive architectural design elements like natural cross-ventilation, rain protection, and ample natural light at Lotus Station. These features not only provide protection from the intense tropical sun, but also facilitate wayfinding and efficient circulation at the interchange, enhance passenger comfort, and significantly reduce energy consumption.
Simon Cheung, Associate Director, Architectural Team Leader, said, “The stations are showcases of Arup’s design expertise. They are thoughtfully designed to enhance passenger experience while incorporating sustainable features to minimise environmental impact, demonstrating our commitment to sustainable and efficient transportation solutions in Macau.”
Following the recent launch of the Seac Pai Van (SPV) Line, which extended the LRT network to the Seac Pai Van community, residents now enjoy better access to the Macau Peninsula and Taipa Island. Arup provided total engineering services for the SPV Line. Now, with the round-the-clock operation of the border-crossing facilities between Macau and Hengqin, the Hengqin Line is set to spur further development in both Hengqin and Taipa areas, creating new opportunities in the Greater Bay Area.
Philip Wong, Arup Project Director and Macau Office Leader, said, “Arup is honoured to have played a key role in delivering both the SPV Line and Hengqin Line, significantly expanding Macau's transportation infrastructure. These projects have greatly improved city connectivity, bridging Macau and Hengqin while creating an eco-friendly railway network that offers enhanced convenience for commuters and tourists alike.”
