Arup, as the structural and MEP consultants, worked closely with OPEN Architects to bring this cultural gem to life. The tower features a northern façade that is artfully open to provide breathtaking views of the sea. Spanning a total floor area of 4,962m2, this tower houses a spectrum of amenities, including an outdoor theatre, a digital exhibition hall, sea-view platforms on multiple levels and a library crowning its summit.

The architectural style of the Sun Tower seamlessly blends white raw concrete with transparent spatial layers, creating a space this is both visually striking and functionally efficient. The integration of a double-layered concrete shell system ensures structural integrity, capable of withstanding various environmental stresses while maintaining optimal internal temperatures. Through meticulous parametric design and the application of advanced strain energy principles, we have optimised the tower’s geometry for enhanced performance, efficiency and sustainability.

Positioned in a coastal environment, the Sun Tower faces unique challenges related to environmental factors and load stresses. To fortify its longevity and durability, we employed innovative concrete formulation techniques, crack prevention technologies and anti-corrosion measures. By utilising C40-grade concrete with specialised admixtures, we bolstered crack resistance and durability, ensuring the tower’s resilience against the elements.

Our collaboration with architects and partners has yielded pioneering material and technological innovations, resulting in successful patent applications. From the free-form concrete formwork construction method, the universal adjustable cantilever frame construction approach to the comprehensive use of 3D parametric digital technology, the Sun Tower stands as a testament to our commitment to pushing architectural boundaries.

The Sun Tower not only stands as a new landmark in Yantai City but also exemplifies the fusion of architectural brilliance and cutting-edge technology, reshaping the city’s skyline.
