Sydney's 2000 Olympic Games placed sustainability and public transport at its heart. In this fifth Millenium Edition of The Arup Journal, we look at our work with the games' organisers including transport modelling, planning pedestrian traffic flows and the design of new cycle ways.

Elsewhere, we look at Manchester's new Aquatics Centre, built for the 2002 Commonwealth Games. Designed to provide a legacy for the people of Manchester, the new facility saw Arup employ design services including all building engineering aspects plus acoustics, fire, computational fluid dynamics, and materials.

This issue also contains articles exploring our work in Osaka, Japan, including the Osaka International Convention Centre, which included state-of-the-art seismic design, as well as the Osaka Maritime Museum.
