Digital twins offer significant opportunities for enhancing efficiency and insights in infrastructure management, especially in energy, water, and transport sectors. Despite their potential, decision-makers are just beginning to recognise the value of connected digital twins.

The National Digital Twin Programme (NDTp), established in 2018, aimed to create a national ecosystem of digital twins for better built environment outcomes. To preserve its knowledge after its five-year mission, the Gemini Papers were produced, sharing insights to inform global decision-makers, guided by the Gemini Principles for public benefit.

Arup, a key supporter of the Centre for Digital Built Britain (CDBB), was tasked with authoring the Gemini Papers. We applied our strategic visioning to distil the National Digital Twin Programme's (NDTp) knowledge into impactful content. Through literature reviews, interviews, workshops, and co-creation sessions, Arup produced a three-part whitepaper on connected digital twins. Published in April 2022, the Gemini Papers present enduring principles, clearly explaining connected digital twin ecosystems and offering a blueprint for their adoption to benefit society, the economy, and the environment.

Already, the Gemini Papers have been referenced in publications and documents internationally and are providing a common reference point for new entrants into the connected digital twin field. The UK Digital Twin Hub is actively promoting the publications, their principles and ideas.

As the world attempts to meet the challenges of providing its citizens with resilient, sustainable supplies of energy, water and other vital services, the Gemini Papers promise to influence policy globally for years to come.

The Arup team did a great job of bringing together the lessons from a very broad community. It's a legacy that well worth celebrating.

The Gemini Papers summarise CDBB’s 5-year legacy and create the blueprint for the future. In an increasingly complex and interconnected world, they bring
together the socio-technical change programme that will form the basis of a future where the built environment enables people and nature to flourish together
for generations.
