Mixed-use building projects that combine spaces for working, living, retail, hotels and leisure offer multifaceted value to commercial developers.

But designing such developments presents a unique set of challenges due to the diverse needs and functions that must be accommodated within a single space.
Arup is adept at seamlessly integrating diverse functions and creating vibrant, sustainable environments that enhance the quality of life for residents and users alike.
Taking a multidisciplinary approach, we work closely with clients, stakeholders, and communities to develop innovative solutions that address integration of uses, transportation needs, infrastructure requirements, and sustainability goals.
The results are mixed-use developments that cultivate and enrich a sense of locality, seamlessly blending into the surrounding communities, such as Bolands Quay in Dublin; Copenhagen harbour front BLOX; San Francisco’s 181 Fremont Tower, the most resilient tall building on the West Coast; Sydney’s vibrant Brookfield Place, Hong Kong flagship AIRSIDE, and Edinburgh’s St James Quarter.
BLOX is a new six-storey mixed-use facility located on a prime location in Copenhagen’s harbour front. Our engineers were faced with having to deliver a complex project on a site with difficult constraints, including construction under and over an arterial route and adjacent to the harbour and Frederiksholms Kanal.
We adopted 3D design from the start of the project and by rationalising the architectural ambition for a series of stacked volumes (which presented a series of mismatched structural grids) we developed a simplified Revit model and this transferred to the architectural model.
