Formally opened in 2003 by Prime Minister Tony Blair, Section 1 of the Channel Tunnel Rail Link - connecting the Channel Tunnel and London - provided the first example of high speed rail in Britain. 

In this special issue of the Arup Journal, we examine Arup's role in this project, from working on developing the business case for high speed rail and identifying the correct route, through to work on the engineering of the ultimate solution and delivery of one of the most important infrastructure projects in recent British history.
